Wild police chase starts near Belton, ends in Leawood

A wild police chase that began near Belton early Monday ended in Leawood.

Police said a man who was driving a stolen pickup truck fled on foot and has not been apprehended.

The incident started about 1:40 a.m. at 171st Street and Holmes Road. A Cass County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a Ford F-350, which was pulling a box trailer, for a traffic violation. The driver of the truck sped off.

The pursuit entered Johnson County where police set tire deflation sticks, which damaged the trailer’s tires. But the driver continued and struck an unoccupied Leawood police car at 145th Street and Mission Road. The trailer’s axle came off at 127th Street and Mission Road but the driver continued to drag the trailer on the pavement.

About 2 a.m. the driver entered the parking lot of the Church of the Nativity at 3800 W. 119th St., where the trailer flipped onto its side. The driver then fled to the northeast on foot. The truck had been stolen from a Grandview auto sales lot.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Tips Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
