This Kansas City neighborhood could soon be getting its own small grocery store

Just weeks after news that Sun Fresh would be leaving a Northland neighborhood, plans for a new grocery store nearby, in a new location, are moving through City Hall.

The Kansas City Plan Commission approved a rezoning request for a lot in the Chaumiere neighborhood on Wednesday, allowing the applicants to utilize an existing building to open a small grocery store and a “potential future restaurant,” according to the request.

City staff wrote that the proposal “would provide new amenities to the surrounding neighborhood.”

The vacant building at 3746 NE Winn Rd. was previously a commercial business, but had been zoned as residential and is surrounded mostly by homes. If the change is approved, the site would be zoned as a neighborhood business, allowing “small-scale retail” to meet “the day-to-day convenience needs of nearby residents.”

The applicants, Ary and Alina Hama-Amin, who have owned the building since 2016 did not immediately respond to requests for comment. They’ve recently made upgrades to the property and have plans to fix the parking lot, the commission said.

Further details of the plans aren’t yet available, but Alina Hama-Amin told the commission Wednesday that the store will not sell alcohol or tobacco products.

The request will be presented to the City Council for final approval.

The Northland Sun Fresh location at 4357 NE Chouteau Trafficway stopped serving customers on Feb. 28, prompting members of the neighborhood to grieve the loss of their local grocery store.

“It keeps the neighborhood alive,” Anne McManus, a resident of the Chaumiere neighborhood, said at the time.

At least one neighbor testified Wednesday in support of the new store’s plans, calling it a “great asset to the community.”

McManus told The Star Wednesday she is looking forward to a grocery store moving into the empty building.

“I think it will be nice to have a little neighborhood grocery store down there. It used to be a grocery store, and I’m really hoping that they can get it rezoned as a business,” she said.
