KC Star wins several first place awards in Missouri journalism contest

The Kansas City Star won several first-place awards in the annual Missouri Associated Press Managing Editors newswriting and photo competition.

Laura Bauer won first place in investigative or in-depth reporting for a series of stories about a drowning that occurred after a Highway Patrol arrest at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Other first-place awards: Sam McDowell in sports feature writing; Don Munday in headline writing; and Rich Sugg in sports photos.

Other newswriting awards: Eric Adler, second place in feature writing; Mike Hendricks and Mara’ Rose Williams, third in investigative/in-depth reporting; Yael Abouhalkah, third in opinion writing; Vahe Gregorian, third in sports features; Dave Helling, Laura Bauer, Brian Burnes, Judy L. Thomas and Mary Sanchez, third in spot news; sports staff, second in spot sports, and Gregorian, Randy Covitz, Sam Mellinger and Tod Palmer third; Hannah Ritchie, third in headline writing.

Other photo awards: Keith Myers, second, and David Pulliam, third, in feature photos; Myers, third in photo story; Sugg, second, and John Sleezer, third in sports photos; Tammy Ljungblad, second, and Sleezer, third in spot news photos.

The Star competed in a division with newspapers of more than 50,000 circulation.
