Dog is hurt in fire at Georgetown Apartments in Merriam
A dog was injured Monday morning after a fire broke out at the Georgetown Apartments in Merriam.
The fire was reported about 11:30 a.m. Monday at the apartments in the 9100 block of West 72nd Street. Firefighters arriving on the scene reported smoke coming from a two-story apartment building.
Firefighters found the blaze in a ground-floor kitchen of one of the apartments. They quickly extinguished the fire and contained damage to that apartment.
During the search of the unit, firefighters found a dog suffering from burns. The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital, but its condition was not known.
No other injuries were reported. Overland Park and Shawnee firefighters responded to the fire.
A stove burner that was left on is believed to have started the fire. The exact cause is being investigated.
