Liberty police entered a home and found a man dead from a gunshot wound in an apparent suicide Thursday after nearby streets and an elementary school were evacuated as a safety precaution, according to authorities.

Officers were called to the home in the 200 block of Meade Street about 2 p.m. to investigate an emotionally distressed man who was armed and reportedly suicidal.

Police tried to talk to the man and offer help but received no response.

Surrounding roads were closed to make room for emergency vehicles. Nearby Manor Hill Elementary School was dismissed early, following the school district’s safety procedures.

When officers entered the home, they found the man dead from a gunshot wound. Police are investigating the death as a possible suicide.

Police remained on the scene Thursday afternoon, but streets were opened to traffic.
