I-35 lanes near the Kansas/Missouri state line to be closed for bridge repair

Various lanes of Interstate 35 in both directions near the Missouri and Kansas state line will be closed for several weeks for a bridge repair project.

Joint replacement work on the I-35 bridge over Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City will begin Monday and continue through October. During the project, at least one lane will be closed in each direction.

During the project, drivers can expect lane closures along southbound I-35 from 27th Street in Kansas City to the Cambridge Circle in Kansas City, Kan.. And along northbound I-35, drivers can expect lane closures 35 from Seventh Street Trafficway in Kansas City, Kan., to Jarboe Street in Kansas City.

The southbound I-35 joint replacement work will be done in three phases, according to a release from the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, one lane of southbound I-35 will close so crews can set up traffic control devices. At 9 p.m., southbound I-35 will be reduced to one lane until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

When crews are finished Tuesday morning, the interstate will have at least one lane closed until the repair work is completed.

The northbound I-35 work will be done in two phases.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, crews will close one lane of northbound I-35 so that crews can set up traffic control devices. The highway will be reduced to one lane from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

When crews are finished Wednesday morning, the interstate will have at least one lane closed until the repair work is completed.

In addition to the lane closures, the ramps from Cambridge Circle to northbound I-35 will be closed for the duration of the project. The ramp from Seventh Street Trafficway to northbound I-35 will be closed during phase two of the project.

During peak travel times, two lanes of I-35 will remain open in both directions. Drivers, however, should expect delays and are urged to find alternative routes.

More than 50,000 vehicles travel on the I-35 bridge over Southwest Boulevard. The high traffic volume and the angle of the bridge has cause a joint plate to loosen. To repair, crews will need to replace the joint.

In other highway construction-related news, the ramp from westbound I-435 to northbound I-35 in Johnson County reopened to traffic at 5 a.m. Thursday. The ramp was closed in late May for pavement reconstruction work.
