Dog killed in Lee’s Summit house fire, one person taken to hospital
An occupant was hospitalized and a pet dog named Molly was killed in a Sunday night house fire in Lee’s Summit.
Pat Parks, mother of Terry Johnson, the homeowner and occupant, was at the house Monday morning. She said her daughter was unhurt but taken to the hospital as a precaution. She has an illness unrelated to the fire, Parks said.
“It was sad,” Parks said. “It looks just fine on the outside, but the inside is just ruined. Fortunately no one was hurt except for the little dog.”
The fire was reported just before 9:15 p.m. Sunday in the 1800 block of Southeast Third Street, according to the Lee’s Summit Fire Department.
When firefighters arrived, they found Johnson still inside looking for two dogs. Firefighters escorted her with one of the dogs.
They searched the house to make sure no one else was inside and brought the fire under control by 10:08 p.m.
The rescued dog was taken by animal control officers for medical treatment. The second dog was found dead inside by firefighters.
The fire heavily damaged the master bedroom and part of a hallway, but there was significant heat and smoke damage throughout the house.
The fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials, according to fire officials.
