Ten fire units responded shortly before noon Saturday to a blazing apartment fire at 3722-3724 E. 9th St., where a resident leaped from a third-story window.

Battalion chief Clayton Calvin said smoke and flames were pouring from the brick building when he arrived. He said 11 people had made it out of the building, including one who jumped with burn injuries. The burn victim was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital, Calvin said.

The Red Cross arrived to provide help to displaced residents.

Calvin said investigators were unable to immediately state the cause of the fire.
