Eagle Scout is identified as teen killed in ATV wreck Thursday
Independence police on Saturday identified a teen who died in an ATV wreck Thursday as 15-year-old Zane Schafer, an Eagle Scout who won an award earlier this year for his community service project.
Zane, of Blue Springs, was killed when the ATV he was driving apparently rolled over and pinned him underneath.
The wreck occurred on private property near Hidden Valley and R.D. Mize roads sometime between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The exact time was unclear because Zane was alone, police said.
Earlier this year, Zane had received the Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award through the Boy Scouts of America.
The award recognized his community service project for special-needs preschoolers and students at Liggett Trail Education Center in Blue Springs. The project made soccer goals for preschoolers and sensory boards that were accessible to students in wheelchairs.
