Police and fire crews rescue motorist from Northland ravine

Kansas City police rescued a motorist Thursday whose vehicle had overturned and rolled down onto a culvert at U.S. 169 and Missouri 152 in the Northland.

The wreck happened about 1 p.m. The motorist, who experienced a medical episode, managed to dial 911 but wasn’t exactly sure of her location. The woman only knew that she was somewhere between Smithville and the Home Depot near Missouri 152 and Ambassador Drive.

That’s a pretty large area for police and fire crews to canvass. Another concern: Because the woman traveled down a ravine, her vehicle wasn’t visible to emergency crews from the roadway.

A police dispatcher kept the woman on the phone while telling her to let searchers know when she could hear emergency sirens. When the woman said she heard emergency crews approaching, the dispatcher instructed her to sound her car horn.

It took police and fire crews nearly 20 minutes to locate the woman. She was not seriously injured.

The wreck is being investigated.
