Last day of classes canceled after fire damages Prairie Creek Elementary School in Olathe

A fire started by a lightning strike forced the Spring Hill School District to cancel the last day of classes Thursday at Prairie Creek Elementary School.

No one was injured in the fire at 17077 W. 165th St. in Olathe.

An automatic alarm detected the fire about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. When firefighters arrived, they didn’t see any smoke or flames coming from the building. But when they entered, they found smoke in the north part of the school.

Within minutes, firefighters located the fire on the roof’s deck. They remained at the school about three hours spraying water on hot spots.

The school will be open from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday for parents to pick up their children’s personal belongings. Teachers will be in their classrooms.

The Y-Care Camp scheduled to begin at the school next week will be held at Wolf Creek Elementary School, 19250 Ridgeview Road in Spring Hill.
