Former federal employee convicted of using money orders stolen during investigation

A former federal employee was convicted Tuesday of using money orders stolen from a Kansas City, Kan., business during a criminal investigation.

Byron G. Gorman, 51, of St. Joseph, pleaded guilty to wire fraud. He had been indicted on federal charges in September.

Prosecutors accused Gorman of stealing money orders while searching a business office for evidence. Gorman was an information technology specialist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was in training to become a computer forensic examiner.

Gorman admitted he used the money orders as fraudulent evidence in a legal battle with creditors over unpaid medical bills.

As a trainee, Gorman’s work was supervised, according to prosecutors. A review of his work turned up no problems.

Sentencing for Gorman has not yet been scheduled.
