The Kansas City school board is expected to vote Wednesday on a final budget for the district’s 2017 fiscal year.

District administrators have proposed a budget of $227.5 million, about $1 million less than the budget approved by the board last year.

“The important thing here is that we are presenting the board with a balanced budget,” said interim superintendent Al Tunis. “We are not spending more than we bring in.”

At the same time, the budget shows the district maintaining an operating reserve of about $66 million.

The school board in February approved the district master plan, which involves boundary changes, school consolidations and an extended school year at the elementary level.

“This budget plan incorporates the goals of the master plan to ensure that (the district) is using its limited resources as effectively and efficiently as possible,” Tunis said.

The board will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the school board offices, 1211 McGee St.
