A lingering storm system rolls in with heavy rain and flash flooding

Stormy weather has parked itself over the Kansas City area, and while an occasional visit is nice, this system could overstay its welcome.

Forecasts call for rain and thunderstorms Monday and again from Tuesday all the way into next week.

The National Weather service issued a flash flood warning until 4:15 p.m. Monday as heavy rains soaked the area.

By 2:30 p.m., the storms had dumped more than 4 inches of rain in at least one part of the Kansas City area, according the Stormwatch website.

Some of the areas that saw the most rainfall totals in the last 12 hours included Northeast Vivion Road at Rock Creek, which had 4.02 inches of rain; Missouri 152 and Northwest Barry Road at Upper Shoal Creek, which both recorded 3.35 inches and Northwest Vivion Road at East Creek, which recorded 2.88. All those locations are in Kansas City, North.

Other parts of the metropolitan area saw significant rainfall, including Lamar Avenue at Turkey Creek in Mission, 2.56 inches; 75th Street at Brush Creek in Prairie Village, 2.25 inches, and Southwest Boulevard at Turkey Creek, 2.44 inches, in Kansas City.

Some of the storms lingering could become severe, with the Weather Channel calling for possible high winds, hail and tornadoes.

“We are not really seeing something that is lining up all the pieces to the puzzle, at least not for us locally,” said Chris Bowman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“A lot of things depend on how the stuff from the previous day or in the morning evolves.”

We should see a break Tuesday, with just a 20 percent chance of rain and a high temperature hitting 83. But the storms return Wednesday and will stay awhile, with flooding a concern.

The forecast is stuck on repeat for nearly a week: Highs in the mid-80s with scattered thunderstorms every day.

And as far as high water on the roadways, it bears repeating: “Turn around. Don’t drown.”
