Stan Lee, R2-D2 and a member of Run-D.M.C. star in Kansas City's Planet Comicon

Stan Lee. Edward James Olmos. Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, of the pioneering hip hop group Run-D.M.C.

They are all at Planet Comicon in Kansas City.

Such is the variety of attractions at Kansas City’s largest comic book convention, which started Friday at Bartle Hall and runs through Sunday.

Of course, comic book creator Stan Lee’s presence at the convention is no surprise. Some will know Olmos from his part in the television series Battlestar Galactica, and others may learn for the first time that McDaniels is a publisher of comics.

Thousands of fans streamed into Bartle Hall Friday to check out their favorite works, be it Star Wars, Star Trek, or Wonder Woman.

Peter Mayhew, the actor who played Chewbacca in Star Wars, will be here. George Takei, of Star Trek, will be here.

And as always, plenty of people came in costume. Wandering among the vendors Friday was Totoro, a character from a Japanese anime movie, and Kitana, a 10,000-year-old warrior princess from the Mortal Kombat franchise.

“We’re super comic book nerds,” said Kitana, who was actually Amber Elliott, of Kansas City. “We love the fandom, the whole dressing up.”

“It’s just coming out and enjoying the geek culture, and in an environment where everyone is doing the same thing and having a good time,” added Totoro, who was Elliott’s husband Jason.

The convention offered many opportunities for children to take photos with characters, such as a 10-foot-tall model of The Hulk. Later, the real Hulk — actually the actor Lou Ferrigno — would be across the hall signing autographs.

The fun continues Saturday, with Sci-Fi speed dating starting at 11 a.m. and panel discussions with Giancarlo Esposito, who played Gus Fring on the television show Breaking Bad, as well as Jason D. Frank, the original green Power Ranger.

The convention ends Sunday at 5 p.m. For more information, visit http://planetcomicon.com.
