Munday on Monday: The $2.50 tomato

If you have priced the veggies and the fruit the grocery sells,

You’ll share in my astonishment at how that cost excels.

Tomatoes at two-fifty per a pound are sometimes seen;

Tomatoes, thus, a luxury well past my humble means.

But on a whim I bought one after thinking once or twice,

While vowing this extravagance would justify the price.

I’d slice it thin — yes, very thin — for meals that ensue,

To last for several sandwiches (and maybe salad, too).

And such for this tomato were my plans so grand, and more

…Until it tumbled off the plate and splattered on the floor.
