Rare sightings of birds out of their natural habitat are becoming a thing in Johnson County.

Last week, it was a stray peacock that has Lenexa police abuzz.

In a tweet sent out Tuesday, Lenexa police said, “In the ‘you don’t see this everyday’ category, 1 of our #AnimalControlOfficers had to wrangle a stray #peacock.”

The wayward bird was found Friday by Johnson County park police at the Mid-America Sports Complex at 20200 Johnson Drive in Shawnee, said Master Patrol Officer Dan Friesen, a spokesman for Lenexa police.

Because the park police didn’t have the equipment to catch the bird, they sought the help of Lenexa animal control.

“It was about 7:20 p.m. when we got involved,” Friesen said.

The bird was tame and was successfully captured. However the bird’s owner couldn’t be found, so an animal rescue group from Missouri took in the bird.

Last month, it was the rare sighting of a vermilion flycatcher in Johnson County that had the birding community excited.
