I-435 lane closures add to I-35 shutdowns this week in Johnson County
Demolition at the Johnson County Gateway interchange will cause lane closures on Interstate 435 through May 26, the Kansas Department of Transportation announced Tuesday. This adds to full overnight closures of Interstate 35 throughout the week.
Eastbound I-435 from Kansas 10 to Pflumm Road is reduced to two lanes for flyover bridge ramp demolition work. The lanes will reopen May 26, weather permitting.
The two left lanes of eastbound I-435 will remain open. Traffic wishing to reach Quivira Road or U.S. 69 will need to cross over at I-35. Eastbound I-435 access to Quivira Road and U.S. 69 is through a new single-lane crossover just past I-35.
Drivers on eastbound K-10 and southbound/eastbound I-435 will see increased traffic delays, especially during rush hour commutes.
The demolition is also causing full overnight closures of I-35 this week, with southbound lanes shutting down on Tuesday night and northbound lanes on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
All lanes of southbound I-35 from 87th Street to Interstate 435 will be closed from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday, weather permitting. The detour will be U.S. 69 to westbound I-435 to southbound I-35.
All lanes of northbound I-35 at I-435 will be closed from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday and from 8 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday, weather permitting. Then northbound lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday and from 9 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday. The detour will be eastbound I-435 to northbound U.S. 69 to northbound I-35.
Updated traffic information can be found at the Kansas Department of Transportation’s site for the project.
Phase two of the project is scheduled to be completed in December.
