A smoke alarm roused Overland Park residents early Monday, allowing them to escape a fire that caused heavy damage to a duplex in the 7700 block of Kessler Lane, fire department officials said.
A woman who heard the smoke alarm sounding about 3:30 a.m. spotted the fire in the kitchen and woke another adult and six children. Three of the children were visiting for the night, officials said.
Arriving firefighters saw heavy fire coming from the back part of the building. It took about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control, officials said.
Fire officials are investigating the cause, though it appears the fire started in the kitchen.
