Lightning was cause of early morning house fire in Overland Park

A house fire early Wednesday that burned an unoccupied house in Overland Park was caused by lightning, according to fire officials.

The house in the 14000 block of Parkhill Street apparently burned for some time before the fire department was called shortly before 2 a.m., because no one was present when the fire started. The house was a total loss, according to the Overland Park Fire Department.

Investigators believe lightning struck the electrical service on the outside of the house and traveled inside, where the fire started.

No injuries were reported.
