The Johnson County Community College board of trustees will choose from among five candidates to fill the position vacated by Bob Drummond, who resigned from the board last month.

Drummond was elected to the board in 2009 and served until 2013. Then in October of that year he was appointed to the board to fill a seat vacated by Melody Rayl.

Rayl, an Olathe lawyer with Fisher & Phillips, now is among the candidates being considered to fill Drummond’s seat, the college said Wednesday.

Rayl was named a JCCC trustee in 2008 and served until 2013 when she resigned, saying she wanted to spend more time with her family.

The JCCC board at a special meeting Tuesday selected the five candidates from among eight applications for the seat. The candidates, including Rayl, are to be interviewed by the board at a special meeting May 5. The others are:

▪ Steven Beru, Overland Park, retirement education specialist.

▪ Bobby Love, Olathe, senior pastor, Second Baptist Church of Olathe.

▪ Henry Sandate, Shawnee, self-employed, State Farm agent.

▪ Tony Thill, Overland Park, president-CST International, executive vice president-global storage sales.

Each candidate will have five minutes to present themselves to the board. The board then will have 15 minutes to question each candidate.

The new trustee will officially join the board at its meeting on July 21 and fill the remainder of Drummond’s term, which expires January 2018.
