Kansas City school board election results are a week out

Kansas City election officials say it will be next week before results from Tuesday’s school board election are sorted out and winners announced.

No names appeared on the ballot Tuesday for the Kansas City Public Schools board.

Only Jennifer Wolfsie, one of three candidates who filed to run in that race, had obtained enough valid signatures to be placed on the ballot. But because she was uncontested and will fill an at-large seat automatically, she did not appear on the ballot.

That left three vacant seats open for write-in candidates.

“Whenever there is a write-in election, that is a ton of work,” said Shawn Kieffer, a director of the Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners.

Kieffer said workers have to look at every ballot and tally the number of votes for each spelling of each name written in. That process won’t start until Monday.
