A 46-year-old man killed in a single-vehicle accident Thursday in the westbound lanes of U.S. 50 in Lee’s Summit has been identified as Alan Tate of Kansas City, Kan.

The crash occurred about 11:30 a.m. at the O’Brien Street overpass. Police continued their investigation Friday.

Traffic in both directions on U.S. 50 was closed for several hours Thursday while investigators gathered evidence and cleared debris. The highway reopened about 3:30 p.m.

Tate lost control of the truck and traveled off the roadway to the south. The truck struck the concrete bridge support for the O’Brien overpass. Tate died at the scene, according to police reports.

Engineers with the Missouri Department of Transportation later determined that the bridge was safe for travel.
