Teenager is killed in Clay County crash

An Excelsior Springs teenager was killed Monday night after he fell asleep while driving, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

The patrol said that just before 8:30 p.m. Monday, 16-year-old Nathaniel S. Perkins was driving a Dodge Ram truck south on U.S. 69 at Northeast 112th Street in Clay County when the vehicle left the roadway.

When he attempted to steer back onto the road, the truck overturned. Perkins, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected, according to the patrol. He died at the scene.

A passenger, a 13-year-old girl from Excelsior Springs, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The patrol said she had been wearing a seat belt.
