A 14-year-old girl was killed in a car accident Sunday afternoon in Johnson County, Mo.

Four others, including a baby boy, were injured in the collision that killed Shirley Tran of Warrensburg, Mo., at a highway intersection east of Powell Gardens.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, a 2010 Dodge Avenger occupied by a 32-year-old Odessa woman and her baby boy was headed north on Missouri 131 when the driver failed to yield to a 2015 Toyota Corolla heading east on U.S. 50.

The Avenger pulled into the path of the Corolla, which struck the left rear of the Avenger. Both cars came to rest in the highway median.

A Johnson County coroner pronounced Tran dead at the scene. The four others were taken to Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence. Although the boy’s injuries were considered minor, his mother was in serious condition, as were the two other occupants of the eastbound car.

All five people had been wearing using seat belts, the highway patrol said.
