The only penguin chick born at the Kansas City Zoo died Monday of kidney failure, zoo officials said.

The Humboldt penguin lived 37 days. The zoo said its parents tried to care for it but were unable to provide nutrients for it to grow. On Friday, the chick was placed in an incubator and was found to have respiratory problems as well.

Another penguin pair had two fertile eggs but neither made it through incubation. Another egg was infertile.

Zoo officials said they were saddened by the death but hopeful for future offspring.
