Driver killed in traffic accident in Kessler Park

One person was killed in a traffic accident in northeast Kansas City Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

Officers were called to Kessler Park, near Independence Avenue and Chestnut Trafficway, about 3 p.m. after the driver of a GMC pickup truck was killed in a wreck.

Investigators believe that two vehicles had been speeding south through the park on Chestnut Trafficway when they made contact with each other and lost control. The GMC went off the road to the right, knocked out a utility pole and drove under a support beam for the Lexington Avenue bridge. The driver of the GMC was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other vehicle, a Chevy Impala, also went off the road and struck a corner of the support beam before spinning around and coming to rest. The driver of that car was transported to a hospital by his mother to be treated for minor injuries, police said. Neither driver was wearing a seat belt.
