KCPD motorcycle officer suffers fractured leg

A Kansas City police motorcycle officer suffered a fractured leg Monday morning when a vehicle struck him on a northeast area street.

The officer was in serious condition at a hospital following the 6:30 a.m. incident in the 400 block of Hardesty Avenue, about a block south of Budd Park.

The officer was working an enforcement assignment and had been parked facing north along the east curb, police said.

He pulled out from the curb and appeared to have been turning his motorcycle in the road, most likely to pursue a southbound driver, when the northbound vehicle struck him.

A vehicle parked along the curb likely obscured his view of the approaching car and also obscured that driver’s view, said Sgt. Bill Mahoney with the accident investigation unit.

The motorist remained at the scene and cooperated with accident investigators, Mahoney said.
