Winds lead to burn ban in Overland Park and Merriam

The Overland Park Fire Marshal declared a ban on open burning in that city and in Merriam on Sunday due to dry and breezy weather conditions.

The National Weather Service said there is a slightly elevated fire danger. Previously issued burn permits are suspended. Recreational fires are prohibited.

Outdoor grilling is allowed but the fire marshal urges extreme caution. Smokers are asked to safely discard smoking materials.
