Independence police and fire officials opened an investigation Monday into a body discovered by firefighters while they fought a blaze in the southern part of the city.
Battalion Chief Mike Ditamore said firefighters were called to the fire at a home in the 14300 block of East Covington Road about 1 p.m., after a passer-by reported smoke coming from the home.
When crews arrived, they reported “moderate to heavy” smoke coming from the roof, he said.
Firefighters found a woman inside the kitchen, said Assistant Fire Chief Mark Carrick. She died at the scene. Officials did not release her name or age Monday.
Fire crews remained at the scene at mid-afternoon, cleaning up and assisting with the investigation.
Ditamore said more information about the fire and the victim could be available later.
