About 50 student athletes at Kansas City Kansas Community College were in need of new housing after their apartment building caught fire Saturday afternoon.
Firefighters arrived at 7300 State Ave. about 3:45 p.m. to find heavy smoke pouring from the rear, upper floors of the 24-unit building. A fire in one of the units had spread to others.
Everyone who was home was evacuated without injury, and the fire was brought under control within one hour, officials said.
The apartment building was leased by the college to serve student athletes. The residents had been returning throughout the weekend from holiday break.
