January to end with temps nearing 60 degrees in Kansas City; winter storm could be brewing

Just one more day of cool weather and then Kansas City area is primed for a warm up with temperatures nearing 60 degrees on Friday.

Kansas City’s temperatures have been running on the cool side — 1 1/2 degrees below normal this January. That trend will continue Tuesday as highs are expected to reach only the mid-30s. The normal high is 39 degrees.

But come Wednesday, the metropolitan area will see temperatures climb into the low 40s. Highs near 50s are likely Thursday. Friday will be the warmest as temperatures are expected to be in the upper 50s, pushing to 60 degrees in some areas, according to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill.

The weekend also looks nice as Saturday’s highs are expected to be in the middle 50s and Sunday’s highs likely will be in the upper 40s.

Dry conditions are expected to close out January as well. The next chance for precipitation comes Sunday when a few light rain showers might be possible as a cold front moves through the area.

A significant winter storm might be brewing that could impact the area early next, but there’s inconsistencies and uncertainty with the weather models regarding the path of the storm system, according to the National Weather Service’s area forecast discussion.

Though the storm could impact the Kansas City area, models indicated the storm could take what has been the more preferred track for winter storms this season — through northern Kansas and eastern Nebraska, bypassing the Kansas City area to the north, according to the National Weather Service.
