Crash in Lee’s Summit kills one teen, seriously injures two others

A Blue Springs teenager died and two Kansas City teens were seriously injured late Friday in a car crash in Lee’s Summit.

Nefertiti D. Smith, 17, was a passenger in a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse that was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control on eastbound Interstate 470 at U.S. 50, according to a Missouri Highway Patrol accident report.

The car veered off the right side of the highway about 11:50 p.m. and struck a guardrail, ejecting Smith and the driver, Tamerick J. Wright, 17. The car then rolled over, ejecting Kenveion D. West, 18.

Smith was pronounced dead at a hospital at 3:32 a.m.

None of the teens was wearing a seat belt, the Highway Patrol report said.
