Lee’s Summit Price Chopper temporarily closes after fire

A fire at a Lee’s Summit Price Chopper early Thursday temporarily closed the store while damage to the building and products was investigated.

The Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded about 1:45 a.m. at the Price Chopper at 300 S.W. Blue Parkway.

The call originated from an automatic alarm, but when dispatchers contacted the store, employees said they were investigating a smoke odor. They then called back reporting a small fire.

Firefighters found the fire on a platform above a walk-in cooler in the deli section. The fire was under control by 2:15 a.m.

The fire damage was contained to a water heating unit and the wood platform above the cooler. There was moderate smoke damage to the area around the cooler, with lighter smoke damage throughout the store, fire officials said.

The Jackson County Health Department inspected the building and the products inside.

This was the second time that firefighters had been to the store to investigate the odor of smoke. Fire crews on Wednesday evening spent two hours looking for the cause. The odor cleared and the source could not be determined.
