Controversial Brookside house with sand-covered yard is damaged by fire

A fire Wednesday night damaged a Brookside home that has become well known in the neighborhood since its owner replaced the lawn with sand.

The Kansas City Fire Department sent several crews to battle the fire at Walnut Street and East Meyer Boulevard, neighbors said. On Thursday, the front door and windows were boarded up.

The house has been a source of controversy in the neighborhood since the owner covered the surrounding lawn with tons of sand and decorated it with beach chairs and yard art.

The Fire Department did not report any injuries.
