Sick pilot causes unscheduled landing at KCI

A Spirit Airlines flight bound for Las Vegas from Baltimore, Md., made an unplanned stop at Kansas City International Airport on Thursday morning after the pilot fell ill.

Emergency crews responded, and the plane landed without trouble at mid morning.

Passengers were taken off the flight to wait in the terminal until a flight crew replacement could arrive. There were 146 persons on board.

Both the pilot and a passenger who also reported feeling ill were able to walk off the plane for medical attention.

“It was a Christmas Day inconvenience to the passengers, but they’re getting food and the chance to get off the plane instead of sit there,” said KCI spokesman Joe McBride.

The Spirit Airlines web page showed the flight was expected to leave Kansas City for Las Vegas at 3 p.m.
