Kansas City police release name of pedestrian killed on U.S. 40

Police have identified a 65-year-old pedestrian killed early Saturday while crossing U.S. 40 at Phelps Road as Thomas Layton of Independence.

Layton was attempting to cross the highway just before 3 a.m. when a westbound vehicle struck him, police said. Three other vehicles hit him after he landed on the pavement, police said.

Layton died at the scene. The first two drivers pulled over and waited for police. Police said they did not know why the other motorists did not stop.
