Two suspects charged in shooting near Lawrence

Two people have been charged with attempted first-degree murder after a motorist was shot on a highway near Lawrence.

Brittany Nicole Smith, 22, of Eudora and 25-year-old Edward Joseph Parker of Lawrence were charged Wednesday. Parker’s bond was set at $150,000 and Smith’s was set for $75,000.

Douglas County authorities say Skylar Workman, 24, of Lawrence was shot May 26 as he drove on Highway 59 south of Lawrence. He is still recovering at a Topeka hospital.

The motive for the shooting has never been publicized but authorities say it was not a random act of violence.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports the suspects’ next court appearances are scheduled for June 10.
