Icy roads proved challenging for many Kansas City area drivers Tuesday morning with numerous rush-hour crashes being reported across the metropolitan area.

Freezing temperatures turned wet roads icy and spawned numerous wrecks.

One of the biggest trouble areas was along Interstate 435 across the southern part of the metropolitan area.

All lanes of westbound Interstate 435 at Interstate 35 in Lenexa were closed for a short period because of a crash and icy conditions. The highway was reopened by 6:20 a.m.

Meanwhile on the Missouri side, crashes were reported near the Three Trails Crossing (formerly the Grandview Triangle) interchange as well as along U.S. 50 just south of Interstate 470 in Lee’s Summit.

The National Weather Service warned that black ice had been reported on I-435 and other area roads including the Grandview Triangle. Drivers were urged to avoid those areas and use caution during their morning commute.

A crash closed the exit to Stadium Drive from northbound I-435 and in Kansas City, North, a two-vehicle collision closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 at Chouteau Trafficway.
