High winds and power outages hit area as storms move out
Severe storms moved through parts of the Kansas City area on Wednesday, leaving heavy winds behind as the storms headed north and east.
The storms were part of a system that packed blizzard-like conditions for portions of Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas, according to the National Weather Service.
In Kansas City, the storms brought wind gusts measured at 40 and 50 mph. The forecast calls for cloudy skies Thursday and clear weather over the weekend.
More than 15,000 customers lost power in the Kansas City area Wednesday afternoon, according to KCP&L. Evening classes were canceled at Metropolitan Community College-Longview in Lee’s Summit and at Park University’s Parkville campus.
A tornado watch across parts of northwestern Missouri expired Wednesday with no confirmed sightings. Tornadoes caused damage across Iowa, but no injuries were reported Wednesday night.
