Grain Valley changes ordinance on speed traps

Grain Valley has changed its ordinance regarding speed traps after a lawsuit challenged a ticket that a man received for flashing his lights to warn other motorists.

The city’s board of alderman modified its ordinance to delete a phrase that made it an offense to give notice to others that a speed check was being conducted. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit last week contending the ordinance was unconstitutional.

The city issued a statement saying its municipal prosecutor had dismissed the ticket in October, before learning of the legal challenge.

Interim City Administrator Ryan Hunt said Grain Valley does not wish to infringe on First Amendment rights.
