Kansas City police board agrees to pay $1.5 million to settle civil lawsuit
Kansas City police commissioners agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle an employment discrimination lawsuit filed against the department.
The board voted 5-0 in closed session in October to approve the settlement. Details about the lawsuit filed in Clay County Circuit Court are not available because the case has been sealed by a court order.
In the order issued by Circuit Judge Janet Sutton, only the names of the parties, the case number and the amount of the settlement are public.
The plaintiff is identified only as John Doe and is represented by Kirk Holman, who did not return calls seeking comment.
Nanci Gonder, a spokeswoman for the Missouri attorney general’s office, which represented the police board in the lawsuit, declined to comment.
Sutton recently denied a request to have the case unsealed.
