Investigators studying debris at the Independence Avenue fire site hope to complete their work by Sunday or Monday.

Local and federal workers have been studying debris at the site of the former three-story building at 2608 Independence Ave. Once they complete their work, the investigation will continue as they further consider evidence gathered off-site, such as interviews conducted with firefighters who fought the blaze and area residents who witnessed it.

Two Kansas City firefighters died while battling the Oct. 12 blaze.

Investigators hope to be able to rule out possible causes of the fire by the end of next week, said John Ham, spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
