Driver seriously hurt after fleeing from Kansas City traffic officer

A driver who fled from a Kansas City police traffic officer Wednesday afternoon suffered serious injuries after she struck three vehicles.

The wreck occurred before 12:30 p.m. near 51st Street and Walrond Avenue. Police said a traffic officer pulled over the driver for speeding and the driver initially stopped. But when the officer exited his vehicle and approached her, she sped away, police said, crashing after about two blocks.

She crossed the center line while westbound on 51st, hitting an eastbound vehicle head-on, said Sgt. Bill Mahoney. That vehicle then hit a parked car, he said. The suspect’s vehicle continued to slide into an eastbound city truck occupied by two people.

Police called for three ambulances, including one for the suspect, who reportedly suffered a serious but not life-threatening head injury. The occupants of the other vehicles suffered minor injuries, police said.

Officers found what they believed to be illegal drugs in the suspect’s vehicle.
