American Royal parade shifts to Arrowhead — just like the barbecue contest

Remember: Everything American Royal Barbecue is at Arrowhead Stadium this year. And we mean everything, including the parade.

So don’t head downtown Saturday morning expecting to see the marching bands and other parade participants. They will be parading through the parking lots at the Truman Sports Complex, starting at 10 a.m.

And unlike the barbecue contest, billed as the biggest in the world, the parade is free — both for parking and watching.

For the rest of the day’s events, which run from 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., parking is $20 and admission is $15. Those events include a family fun fest from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Barbecue Hall of Fame inductions at 7 p.m. and a concert by Big & Rich at 9 p.m.

Another reminder: The barbecue is a competition and not a sampling event. Sponsors say food safety regulations prohibit the sampling of contest foods. But Zarda Bar-B-Q and Plowboys Barbeque will “provide food options,” sponsors said.
