Police investigate suspect after bicyclist is critically injured in hit-and-run crash in Shawnee

Police said they were investigating a driver and vehicle suspected in a hit-and-run crash that injured a bicyclist in Shawnee on Wednesday morning.

A white truck that possibly had front-end damage struck the bicyclist about 5:20 a.m. along westbound Shawnee Mission Parkway near Vista Drive. The driver didn’t stop and continued west on Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Police identified the injured bicyclist as 62-year-old Steve McCrary.

Both the truck and the bicyclist were headed west at the time of the crash. An ambulance took the bike rider, who was conscious when emergency workers arrived, to Overland Park Regional Medical Center’s trauma center. He was listed in critical condition.

On Wednesday afternoon, Shawnee police said they had identified a suspect vehicle and detained a suspected driver. Crime scene investigators from the Johnson County sheriff’s office examined the vehicle, and the suspect was released while the investigation continued.
