A police officer and high school student from Bonner Springs were honored Monday at the White House as “Champions of Change.”

Master Patrol Officer Anthony Davis of the Bonner Springs Police Department and Blake McMahan, a senior at Bonner Springs High School, were among seven pairs of people from across the country to be recognized for their work in building positive relationships between law enforcement and youths.

Davis, a school resource officer who teaches criminal justice at the school, serves as a mentor and coach to students. Two students from the school’s criminal justice program were among the top three scorers in the Kansas SkillsUSA criminal justice competition last year.

McMahan, who aspires to be a police officer, is president of the school’s criminal justice club and took third place at last year’s skills competition. He spent more than 160 hours volunteering at the Police Department over the summer.
