Juvenile authorities charge two teens in apparently accidental shooting death

Jackson County juvenile authorities on Thursday charged two teenagers in an apparently accidental shooting death in the Northeast area of Kansas City.

Tina Castro, 40, was shot to death about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday while seated in a friend’s car at Thompson and Oakley avenues, Kansas City police said. A 16-year-old relative of Castro’s and the boy’s 16-year-old friend got into the back seat and were playing with guns, police said.

After the boys swapped guns, the relative allegedly touched the trigger, causing the gun to fire a single bullet into Castro’s back. Her friend pulled her out of the car. She died at the scene.

Police later arrested the teens nearby. They have been charged with involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action, according to Jackson County court officials.

Because they are juveniles, their names were not released.
