Weapon charge filed in KC homicide outside downtown nightclub

Prosecutors have filed a weapon-related charge against a Kansas City man allegedly involved in a fatal shooting in January outside a club one block south of the Sprint Center.

Eldon M. Cox, 30, is accused of unlawful possession of a firearm in relation to the shooting that killed Brandon Arledge, 24, on Jan. 26 outside Retro, a club in the 1500 block of McGee Street.

Because he is a convicted felon, Cox could not lawfully possess a handgun. Yet, according to court documents, he had fired the fatal shots that night.

Court records give this account:

An argument at the club’s entrance happened during an after-hours party. Arledge, who had been trying to enter the club, returned to a vehicle after threatening to a get a gun. He pulled a handgun from under a seat and either stuck it in his waistband or held it at his side, according to different witness accounts. Cox followed him to the car. Witnesses reported seeing Cox fire several shots at Arledge, possibly after Arledge again threatened to use his own gun.

Cox has not been charged with killing Arledge.
