Parked cars annoy driver on Brookside Boulevard

The Dog loves a leisurely cruise down Brookside Boulevard, head out the window, bound for watering holes in the south part of town.

But Nancy Bone of Kansas City says such cruises aren’t as easy as they could be. She wants to know why parallel parking is allowed on the west side of the street between 62nd Terrace and 63rd Street.

When cars are parked there, the right traffic lane narrows dramatically, forcing motorists to merge into the left lane. It’s not a problem when traffic is light, she said, but the volume is often heavy.

“It seems senseless to force a merge so that three or four cars can park there.”

In the Brookside shopping area, the city has placed signs along Brookside Boulevard in an effort to balance the safety needs of residents and Border Star Montessori School with the needs of businesses, said Travis Kiefer, an assistant director with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

That said, the parks department has agreed to chew on Bone’s suggestion.

“We will work with the traffic division of public works to see if there is a more suitable solution to the parallel parking and signage,” Kiefer said.

The Watchdog says Nancy Bone has one of the greatest names — ever.
